SANKOFA

: to go back and get it

Founded in 2018, Sankofa Birthworkers Collective was birthed out of the desire for community among Black Birthworkers in the Inland Empire—San Bernardino & Riverside counties. Our connection was centered around the commitment to making a difference in Black maternal healthcare.

The Ghanaian sentiment of Sankofa, to remember and honor the wisdom of the past and bring it into the future, reflects our commitment to the sacred and intuitive work our ancestors did in our communities for generations.

As Black birthworkers, we desire to see one another thrive not only in our work, but also in our wellness. We don’t want to be another group of “burnt out Black women”, but a flourishing sisterhood.

We are a Collective of Black Birthworkers, reclaiming our rights to birth through community, cause and connection.

Our mission is to center connection, foster wellness, and support Black Birthworkers throughout the Inland Empire.

Our vision is wellness for all Black birthing families through a community of Black Birthworkers who provide direct services, education, and advocacy.
